May 3, 2006: Hi there! I read with interest your classroom bucket project. Your website asked for feedback. May I offer some feedback? As I started my ‘career’ as a Mom chairing the school’s emergency preparedness committee. Now I am the district coordinator. I have been the North Shore (SD44 & 45) Emergency Preparedness & Planning Coordinator for many years and we have classroom grab ‘n go kits similar to what you describe. We initially used lidded buckets too, but found them to be cumbersome to store and for students to carry outside. We have found duffel bags work much easier. On the North Shore, we take an all hazards (flood, fire, landslide, earthquake, violent incident, etc) approach to emergency management. There are many things schools can do to make their schools safer, in the event of an emergency or disaster. Preparing kits is a good foot forward. |
