The powerful earthquake that rocked much of China has killed more than 8,500 people and trapped nearly 900 students under the rubble of their school. Very early reports from the official Xinhua News Agency quoted the Sichuan provincial government as saying 7,651 people died across the province, but the situation in at least two counties remain unclear. In Beichuan county, just east of the epicentre, up to 5,000 people were killed and 80 per cent of buildings collapsed.
Rescuers are battling to free 900 students buried beneath their high school in the city of Dujiangyan, in Sichuan.
